Early AIDS, a reality check

In late 1983, just before Mary Morrison left Aotearoa New Zealand for the USA, TIME published a cover article about AIDS. She was on her way to sit the Californian registered nurse exams and recalls reading it and becoming slightly concerned and somewhat mystified: “Two years after AIDS is first described, misperceptions and myths about the disease run rampant. Gay men are being treated like "lepers," while untested theories about what was causing the disease, ranging from viruses to chemicals to overstimulation from sex, only confused the public and scientists more.”

This lecture presents her recollections of working during the emergence of what was to become known as the AIDS epidemic.

The talk will be followed by Q&A.

Biography
Mary Morrison holds post graduate qualifications in fine arts and hi-tech nursing. Her dissertation was titled The Social Aesthetics of Critical Care and thesis, POST HUMAN; An Art Project located in Critical Care. She has worked in Oakland’s notorious trauma center, Highland Hospital; Florence Nightingale’s St Thomas’ Hospital, London and for 5 years attended the Elam School of Fine Arts while working at Auckland City Hospital’s Department of Critical Care Medicine.
