ATE Journal of Māori Art was launched in June 2019 by co-editors Matariki Williams (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Hauiti, Taranaki) and Bridget Reweti (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi). ATE is an annual, peer-reviewed journal with an explicit focus on Māori art, artists and art movements.
Content for Volume One was developed during a wānanga held with writers, Chloe Cull, Cassandra Barnett, Tryphena Cracknell, Janneen Love, and our editorial board, Professor Robert Jahnke, Sean Mallon and Professor Huhana Smith.
Articles in Volume One reflect the breadth and beauty of ngā toi Māori including Cath Brown, Rachel Shearer, wāhine mau whao, Sandy Adsett, Jeremy Leatinu’u, Kereama Taepa, Nathan Pohio and Brett Graham. We are also pleased to include a republished text from the rangatira of te ao toi Māori, Jonathan Mane-Wheoki, with thanks to Art New Zealand and Jonathan’s partner Paul Bushnell.
