Artspace Aotearoa seeks to fill the position of Assistant Curator 2021/2022. This is an exciting one-year professional development opportunity for an ambitious emerging curator in a leading contemporary art organisation.
Reports To: Director, Artspace Aotearoa.
Salary indication: $46,500 NZD for 37.5 hours per/wk.
About the role as Assistant Curator:
This one-year professional development role will provide the opportunity for you to gain extensive work experience through direct involvement in, and contribution to the production and execution of the Artspace Aotearoa programme.
Artspace Aotearoa aims to actively contribute to the body of knowledge within the field of contemporary art. Each team member seeks to be active in this, by expanding their own personal awareness of current cultural and political discourse.
The year of training and development will include:
- An opportunity to work with Aotearoa New Zealand and international partners, including artists and curators.
- Opportunities to network with relevant channels that connect with, and professionally benefit your curatorial practice.
- Direct involvement in all stages of the organisation's projects while being given the freedom to evolve and initiate projects.
- Opportunity for artistic development within the contemporary art public sector.
- Develop your curatorial portfolio within Aotearoa New Zealand.
- An opportunity to develop your own learning process, which can include a series of national and international research trips.

Past Assistant Curators have gone on into curatorial positions with other reputable art organisations. Others have become critics, writers, and successful freelancers with esteemed national and international institutions.
About you:
As an Assistant Curator, you should be passionate about making a significant contribution to the development of contemporary art in Aotearoa New Zealand. You are eager to learn, are able to put your sleeves up and thrive in a high-pressure environment.
- You value Manaakitanga first and foremost and at all times.
- You are passionate about and possess a broad knowledge of contemporary art - with a desire to curate at a professional level.
- You will be able to drive the development of your own personal and professional development.
- You are adroit in writing.
- You have high professional confidence with experience in project management.
- Possess interpersonal skills which demonstrate an ability to engage professionally and effectively with others.
- You will have an awareness and invested interest and respect for Te Ao Māori.
- A strong commitment to promoting the bicultural and multicultural diversity of Aotearoa; You enjoy building connections with a diverse range of communities.
- Be knowledgeable of practices and protocols around Tikanga & Kawa (Hauora: physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural).
- As the ideal candidate, you will show initiative, able to multitask while being focussed and considered in a high-paced environment.
- Endeavour to advance the organisation's profile. And be proud to represent Artspace Aotearoa.
- Some degree of technical or practical experience in exhibition construction and, or art-making would be an advantage.
