Apple’s editions for Artspace Aotearoa exemplify his interest in the mechanics of financial exchange and capital. Three different colours of prints in two different sizes were produced for the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, the text directly addressing the prices of the works, and their functions as tax deductible donations for Artspace Aotearoa.
Billy Apple (b. Barrie Bates, 1935, Aotearoa), is a pioneer in pop and conceptual art. After studying graphic design at the Royal College of Art in London, Bates reinvented himself as Billy Apple in 1962. This change in name, accompanied by his signature dyed-blond hair, exemplified what would become a central interest in commercial identity, branding, and the operation of marketing devices.
This edition was originally available in black, red, green, and blue. The red and black editions are sold out. This edition is framed in a slim white frame with UV protective glass.
