Moana Hakere, Moana Takoko

Rākau: Kauri

Both the robust and aero-hydrodynamic form of kūtai is acknowledged through the shaping of kauri; a native hardwood in Aotearoa. Reinforced by their natural design, kuūtai endure the ocean’s turbulence. The gloomy, silty sediment stirred up, referenced in the colour of lashing.

Artspace Aotearoa is proud to present Te Taiao, a series of whakarei artist editions initiated and made by artist Charles Turetahi (Teare) in collaboration with local Karangahape whānau. Teare is a woodcarver and social activist who is part of the Boil Up Crew, a collective based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

These handmade whakarei reclaim indigenous taonga such as kauri, mataī and tōtara to celebrate tātai whakapapa (reciting genealogy or epistemology). Te Taiao employs mātauranga Māori & te ao Māori as regenerative solutions to heal our taiao.
