Moana Tu ki te Wao

Rākau: Kauri

A pair of pipi carved from tōtara and kauri speak of diverse converging waters, the expansive terrain and various bodies of water that pipi inhabit and art abundant in. Nutrient dense waters flood the lips of the pipi filtering forest minerals. Each carved from a single wood their constant grain wraps the tiers and layers of these pipi.

Artspace Aotearoa is proud to present Te Taiao, a series of whakarei artist editions initiated and made by artist Charles Turetahi (Teare) in collaboration with local Karangahape whānau. Teare is a woodcarver and social activist who is part of the Boil Up Crew, a collective based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

These handmade whakarei reclaim indigenous taonga such as kauri, mataī and tōtara to celebrate tātai whakapapa (reciting genealogy or epistemology). Te Taiao employs mātauranga Māori & te ao Māori as regenerative solutions to heal our taiao.
