Toki nā Rongo

Rākau: Kauri

Gentle in its posture, this toki derives its name from the healing properties our taiao shares, and when adorned it asserts the importance of this connection. The simple ritual of caressing its smooth surface is encouraged as to remind us of our reciprocal roles as kaitiaki within our various ecologies. We believe all living things are interconnected, to connect is to regenerate, and to heal we remember.

Artspace Aotearoa is proud to present Te Taiao, a series of whakarei artist editions initiated and made by artist Charles Turetahi (Teare) in collaboration with local Karangahape whānau. Teare is a woodcarver and social activist who is part of the Boil Up Crew, a collective based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

These handmade whakarei reclaim indigenous taonga such as kauri, mataī and tōtara to celebrate tātai whakapapa (reciting genealogy or epistemology). Te Taiao employs mātauranga Māori & te ao Māori as regenerative solutions to heal our taiao.
