Rākau: Swamp Kauri

Half a shell is formed from an ancient piece of swamp kauri risen again and lashed with the colour of new kauri tips. The iridescent exterior of the piece shimmers similar to a kūtai, who like the swamp kauri formed through pressure and bodies of water. The piece also functions as a vessel to catch water likened in shape to a kauri leaf.

Artspace Aotearoa is proud to present Te Taiao, a series of whakarei artist editions initiated and made by artist Charles Turetahi (Teare) in collaboration with local Karangahape whānau. Teare is a woodcarver and social activist who is part of the Boil Up Crew, a collective based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

These handmade whakarei reclaim indigenous taonga such as kauri, mataī and tōtara to celebrate tātai whakapapa (reciting genealogy or epistemology). Te Taiao employs mātauranga Māori & te ao Māori as regenerative solutions to heal our taiao.
