Te Whaiao
Te Whaiao: the phase between Te Pō (the long night) and Te Ao Mārama (the world of light), where infinite potential and energy exist before realisation. To open the programme Rerekē, it felt fitting to warm the Kit in this way, through creativity, energy, movement and sound. DJs Ajhoneysuckle, Hasji and Kohu curated the dancefloor with their oro under the Maramataka of whiro—the first phase of the new moon. A time of new beginnings, kua tau mai te tau o Rerekē!

HE PIKO HE TANIWHAU RAU!! Ajhoneysuckle’s sound echoes her environment–served always with big mauri, sensuality and a careful ear to local and international undulations. Her sets weave tension across the bass continuum, building from the mutations of dub, techno dancehall, jungle, downtempo and further, layering a sonic soul force through rhythm and space. She is guided by bass-rongoā and māorifuturism. ALWAYS PONO!

Hasji [pronounced "HA" breathe out - "SHEE” continue breathing out] (ia/any/all) is a gorge bootist and kaituku waiata based in central Tāmaki Makaurau. They come from Te Arawa, through the hapū of Ngāti Whakaue and Ngāti Rangiwewehi, as well as the Shoebridge whānau of Devon and Sharp whānau of Shropshire.
Their oro is a reflection of their attempts to speak to the base rhythms that are tucked away in the overstimulated structures of city lifestyles and the framework of te taiao–climbing from grounded dubs to high altitude jittas. Mai i te maunga ki te moana. -

Kohu has previously played alongside Wearpounamu, Lakeboon, and WaiWhai and has appeared on the Saturday evening Flaura show with Jack Glacier. Kohu has an oro informed by many musicians, and especially one informed by the teachings of te taiao.
